LESSON 4 - THE TIME, AT & PARTS OF THE DAY

TELLING THE TIME:

Let us learn how to tell the time. It is really simple. Look at the example:

What time is it?
1:00
It is one o’clock.
1:05
It is one (and)* five.
2:15
It is two fifteen. / It is two and a quarter. / It is a quarter past two.
3:30
It is three (and)* thirty.
4:45
It is four forty-five. / It is fifteen to five.
*note: You can choose whether or not to put ‘and.’


AT

We use AT to specify the time:

The class always starts at 7:00 am.
We normally finish school at 1:30 pm.
I usually wake up at 6 o'clock in the morning.


PARTS OF THE DAY / IN, AT

There are some expressions of time we can use to refer to a specific part of the day. Look at the following chart:

In the morning
6 am to 12 m.
I usually wake up at 6 o'clock in the morning.
At noon
12 m to 1 pm
I sometimes meet my friends at noon.
In the afternoon
1 pm to 6 pm
I like coffee in the afternoon.
In the evening
6 pm to 9 pm

At night
9 pm to 6 am*
I never watch a horror movie at night.

NOTE: People often spell 1:00 am as 'one in the morning'
