MUST vs HAVE TO

MUST and HAVE TO express a positive obligation.

  • MUST express a personal obligation:

- You must read the book to approve the exam.
- I must clean up my room today.

  • HAVE TO express obligation to others:


- We have to give Molly her book. 
- Hannah has to wait for her brother to go home.


MUST NOT vs DO NOT HAVE TO

  • MUST NOT is a negative obligation (prohibition)
  • DO NOT HAVE TO is not a negative obligation. It means one is free of not doing it (Optional).



- You do not have to stay up late. (Optional)

- The children must not play in the office. (Prohibition)
