LESSON 6 - GERUNDS / LIKE, HATE, LOVE & ENJOY

GERUNDS
A gerund is a name (noun) formed from a verb by adding -ing.
Read + ing = Reading
Reading is good to learn new things.

We use gerunds to a name to some actions.
Smoking is bad for health.
Running in the classroom is not god.
Not sleeping 6 hours every day is bad for health.

TO BE GOOD/BAD AT + GERUND

If we want to talk about our skills, we can use the expression TO BE GOOD AT (+) and TO BE BAD AT (-) with a GERUND.
-Are You good at playing volleyball?
-I am bad at writing letters.
-I am good at playing the violin.

LIKE - ENJOY - HATE - LOVE

We use verbs LIKE, ENJOY, HATE and LOVE, to talk about our likes and dislikes.
-I like chocolate.
-I enjoy reading magazines.

When these verbs are followed by a noun, we say:
-Lily hates raisins.
-Bob loves car races.
-I do not like motorcycles.

When these verbs are followed by another verb, the second verb becomes a gerund:
I like watching horror movies at night.
You do not like swimming in the pool.
The boys enjoy playing cards in the park.
Mary loves talking to her friends.
We hate waiting too much.

In certain situations, we can use both a noun or a verb after LOVE, LIKE, HATE and ENJOY:
-I love videogames.
-I love playing videogames.
-I enjoy homework.
-I enjoy doing homework.
